At least the original Robber Barons were concerned enough about their public-image to donate millions to worthy charities and built and funded museums and hospitals most which bore their famous names. Carnegie built libraries across the country, Vanderbilt gave money for Vanderbilt and other Universities, John D. Rockefeller gave us Rockefeller Center, funded Black Colleges and helped freemen in the South.
The unspoken purpose of the “monuments” to a families wealth in the Gilded Age was to soften their reputations for brutal work conditions, low wages, violent union breaking, and harsh treatment of child workers. There are hundreds of buildings in the United States built by these leaders of industry.
The 21st century industry tycoons still fight against unions, have dangerous work conditions and contribute tons of pollution. Today’s uber wealthy don’t typically own American factories because they shipped the jobs overseas for cheap labor. Or their wealth is multi-generational (the Robber Barons were the first generation). Tech industries, internet retailers, electronic components resellers and social media companies are owned by the 2024 Robber Barons. Now a lot of their “extra” money goes to manipulating politics, bribing elected officials and buying elections.
Philanthropy isn’t what it used to be as the percent donated now is just a very small amount compared to net worths of today’s billionaires. Those at the lowest income levels donate the high percentage of their earnings.
While I agree on most parts, the Senate is the balance to the House. Because a tyranny by the majority is no better than a tyranny by the minority.
